This subject will give an overview of the community care in Sri Lanka. Students will be attached to MOH area to observe the activities in the antenatal clinics, child welfare, and home care. During home visits with midwife they will be collecting information on families with problems and services provided using a simple questionnaire. The student will develop skills in interviewing and developing a simple questionnaire through group discussions and role-play.
The subject introduces students to the concepts and principles of Community Health Nursing practice. The students discuss, factors influencing community care, health promoting and illness preventive measures. It incorporates the basic concepts, principles and scope of epidemiology.

The focus of this course unit will be to describe the basic concepts of medical nursing, principles needed for caring adult clients and elderly and the nurse’s role in managing medical conditions including disorders in endocrine and metabolic system, renal system, neurological system, musculoskeletal system, haematological system, immune system and male reproductive system, disorders in eye, ear, nose and throat, poisoning and communicable diseases.
The course unit will include study of disease conditions, identifying patient’s need as health teaching, focusing on health promotion, illness prevention, rehabilitation of patients and care of the family, ethical, social and psychological aspects of nursing care, developing appropriate attitudes towards patients and family members are emphasized. Students will have the opportunity to develop increasing skills in clinical judgment and their awareness of the way they utilize this knowledge into clinical practice.
