Course Unit

Objectives

The objectives of this course unit are

·     to provide knowledge on the general pathological process, morphology and consequences of cell injury and cell death, process of inflammation ,pathology of common infectious disease and haematological disorders.

·     to provide practical experience to interpret the haematological test results and critical haematology report.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

·       identify the basic concepts of general pathological processes.

·       explain the pathology of common infectious diseases and common hematological disorders in relation to patient management and nursing care. 

·       explain the pathological basis of haematological tests requested and the basis of interpretation of results.

·       apply knowledge when handling and transporting blood for haematological tests.

·       apply knowledge in effectively when handling patients with impaired pathological conditions

·       demonstrate professional competence when assisting sample collection and blood transfusion

 

Course Content

Basics of general pathology, common diseases of organ systems including etiology, pathogenesis, morphological changes, functional derangement and their clinical significance and the basics of histopathology and haematology

 

Methods of teaching and learning

Basic - Reading materials, Lecture, Tutorials, Practical

Others - Role play, Group presentations, Self-study and Student based seminars

Formative assessment

In-class test – MCQ and SEQ

Summative assessment

MCQ – 20 ; 20%

SEQ – 02 ; 60 %

OSPE –  10 ; 20 %
